Welding Process - Manual Arc with Coated Graphite Electrode

Thmanual arc welding system is defined as the process in which two metals are joined by a localized fusion, produced by an electric arc between a metal electrode and metal base that you want to join.

Arc welding has been known since the end of the last century. At that time, graphite electrode manufacturer gave an uncovered metal rod was used as a filler metal. It was soon discovered that the oxygen and nitrogen in the atmosphere caused fragility and pores in the welded metal, so the metallic core was added with a coating that, when burned, was basified, acting as a protective atmosphere, at the same time contributing to significantly improve other aspects of the process.

  • The electrode consists of a core or metal rod, surrounded by a coating layer, where the core is transferred to the base metal through an electrical zone generated by the welding current.
  • The coating of the electrode, which determines the metallic and chemical characteristics of the joint, is made up of a set of mineral and organic components that fulfill the following functions:
  • Produce protective gases to avoid atmospheric pollution and ionizing gases to direct and maintain the arc.
  • Produce slag to protect the metal already deposited until its solidification.
  • Supply oxidizing materials, alloying elements and iron powder.

The main factor that makes this welding process such a useful method is its simplicity and, therefore, its low price. Despite the wide variety of graphite electrode supplier & welding processes available, the welding with coated electrode has not been displaced from the market. Simplicity makes it a practical procedure; all that a welder needs to work is a power supply, cables, an electrode holder and electrodes. The soldering iron does not have to be next to the source and there is no need to use compressed gases as protection. The procedure is excellent for work, repair, manufacturing and construction.
In addition, welding is very versatile. Its range of applications is enormous: almost all small and medium workshop welding jobs are carried out with a coated electrode; Metal of almost any thickness can be welded and joints of any type can be made.
